Privacy Policy

OpenPatent is published by Tech Tank. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use the OpenPatent desktop app and related website pages.

Summary

• Patent content and project files are stored on your device.
• We do not operate a cloud copy of your local patent work.
• No account or payment is required to use OpenPatent.
• If you connect an external AI provider, requests go directly from your machine to that provider.
• The Mac App Store build does not include third-party analytics or advertising SDKs.

Data Stored on Your Device

When you use OpenPatent, the following stays on your computer unless you delete it:

• Patent drafts, claims, and other documents you create or open
• Project folders and workflow files you choose to work with
• Application settings, preferences, and local session history
• API keys and model configuration for AI providers you enter yourself

We do not receive this local data on Tech Tank servers. Uninstalling the app or deleting project files removes that data from your device.

Network Requests

OpenPatent may connect to the internet when you use features that require it, such as prior-art search or AI-assisted drafting with a configured provider.

• External AI providers. When you configure services such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or Ollama, your prompts and related context are sent directly from your device to those services. Their privacy policies govern that data.
• Public patent databases. Search requests may be sent to third-party patent data sources to retrieve prior-art results.
• Software updates. Direct-download builds may check for updates from our release servers. The Mac App Store build receives updates through Apple.

Website and Support Contact

If you visit this website, email us, or open a GitHub issue, we may receive information you choose to send, such as your email address and message contents. We use that only to respond and improve the product.

Data We Do Not Collect

• Patent content from local-only workflows
• Payment or billing information
• Account credentials for an OpenPatent subscription
• Contacts, calendar, photos, microphone, or location data
• Cross-app or cross-site tracking data

Analytics

The Mac App Store build does not include third-party analytics SDKs. We do not track you across apps or websites.

Data Retention

Local project data remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall OpenPatent. Support messages and issue reports are kept only as long as needed to handle your request and maintain product quality.

Security

We design OpenPatent to keep sensitive patent work on your machine. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so you should protect your device, backups, and any API keys you configure.

Children's Privacy

OpenPatent is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted at this URL with an updated effective date. Your continued use of OpenPatent after changes are posted means you accept the revised policy.
